Withers, MD, FASAM Health systems, hospitals, and physician groups face an enormous challenge in creating and sustaining programs that reduce mortality associated with opioid use disorder. This case study highlights the innovations that led to dramatic reductions in expected mortality and improvement in patient function through outpatient addiction treatment at Geisinger from 2017 to 2019. In particular, we describe Geisinger’s experience using key performance indicators to develop and continually evolve a model of outpatient addiction treatment; we focus on using these KPIs to define, implement, and continuously evaluate the impact of new harm reduction protocols implemented in January 2019.
